We will then return using other trails to the north side of the mountain where there are good views of the Hudson river. Meet at Moreau State Park Entrance near Northway Exit 17 at 9:45 am.

April    21    1034    LYE BROOK FALLS HIKE    Tom Gibbs    583-1550    Lye Brook Falls in the Green Mountains of southern Vermont is a scenic waterfall cascading about 300 feet down a mountain. Manchester VT area. Distance is about 6 mi round trip with a gradual 600 ft elevation change.    Meet at McDonalds in Greenwich at 9:15 a.m.

April    28    #1035    BIG POND IN THE HOFFMAN WILDERNESS HIKE    Chuck    Bennett    747-0268    Big Pond is located west of the village of Schroon Lake and is reached via Hoffman Road. It will be about four miles round trip, of easy walking, to a promontory on the shore of the pond. WCMC or meet at Northway Exit 27 at 10:00 am.

May    5    #1036    SKIDMORE WOODS FLOWER WALK    Edythe Bennett    747-0268    This will be a 3 or 4 mile hike on a variety of trails and we should see many species of wild flowers. Meet just beyond the end of the paved road at the end of North Broadway north of Skidmore College entrance at 10:00 am.

We will bike almost to Quaker Road and return for a distance of 14 - 15 miles. Hikers will hike a portion of the trail, about 5 miles round trip. June    2    #1040    ROGER'S ROCK HIKE    Don McMahon    832-1801    A 3 mi round trip hike with a 600 ft climb. We start by following a trail north that skirts the cliffs. Once on top we bushwhack and follow trails in a CCW circle through a series of scenic outlooks, including Roger's Slide that overlook Lake George. WCMC or meet at Northway Exit 24 at 9:50 am.

June    16    #1042    THACHER PARK    Margaret Ettinger    355-8511    We will hike on the Long Path north from Thacher Park for a lovely view of the Catskills. There will be a moderate climb with some steep sections (5 - 6 miles round trip). Meet in the K-Mart parking lot off Northway exit 9W in Clifton Park at 9:15 a.m or meet at Paint Mine picnic area parking lot at 10 am.

June    23    #1043    SHELVING ROCK MOUNTAIN    Chuck    Bennett    747-0268    An easy climb of 1.5 miles to the summit will offer great views of Lake George as well as Sleeping Beauty Mountain. On the return we will descend a new route via ledges on the west side. Elevation change is 440 feet. Total distance 3-4 miles. WCMC.

After lunch Stewart's Pond is great for    swimming or kayaking. WCMC or meet at Stewarts in Lake Luzerne at 10:00 am.

July    21    #1047    CEDAR RIVER HIKE AND SWIM    Irv Boyle    584-5206    In the Town of Indian Lake, we will follow a loop trail through fields, then woods 2 miles to the Cedar River and then another mile along the bank of the Cedar River.    We can either swim in the Cedar River or at the end of the hike in the "Old Swimming Hole" near the town dump. We will put in at the boat launch area above Spier Falls Dam and canoe about 6 miles. Meet at Moreau Park entrance near Northway exit 17 at 9:15 am.

August    11    #1050    HUDSON RIVER HIKE OR BIKE    Tom Gibbs    583-1550    We will bike on West River road from Rt. 197 to Bacon Hill, then cross the rt 4 bridge to East River Rd.    After lunch in the park at Fort Miller, we cross a second bridge to East River Rd and bike back to Fort Edwards.    There will be a stop at Stewart's before pedaling back to cars (23 miles total). Meet at the Historical site on Roger's Island at 9:15 am.

August    18    #1051    HUDSON RIVER CANOE/KAYAK    Don McMahon    832-1801    We will canoe from the Big Boom Road take out just east of the Northway    upstream as far as navagability permits, then return to the Hudson Point Recreation Area for lunch. There is a short loop trail there worth following. On the return trip there are some small inlets that can be explored. Meet at the take out at the end of Big Boom Road at 10:00 am.

September    1    #1053    SHERMAN ISLAND CANOE/KAYAK    Don McMahon    832-1801    We will canoe/kayak about 4 mi rt to the Sherman Island portage, carry about 100 feet to a small bay, canoe 100 yards to the start of a logging road. We will have lunch either at the overflow spillway dam, which is less than 1/2 mi down the logging road or we will return to a rocky peninsula on the Hudson which offers good swimming. Meet outside the Moreau Park entrance at 10:00 am.

Attendees should provide a dish to share and their own beverages.    To cover costs there will be a $3 charge per attendee. Meet at the day picnic area at 10:00 am.

September    22    #1056    SACANDAGA BIKE RIDE    Ned Bigelow    399-0014    Starting at the County park in Day near Edinburg town line on No. Shore Rd, we will bike NE to Yates Hill Rd and climb 517 ft to Military Rd. Short section at 14% grade. Then SE to the end and follow No. Shore Rd back to the park for a total distance of 17.3 miles. Meet at the park at 10:00 am.

Everyone should bring a dish to share and their own beverages to drink. Meet at the Warming Hut off the east end (Rt 9) of the Avenue of the Pines just south of Saratoga Springs at 10:00 am.

November    3    #1062    BALD MOUNTAIN PRESERVE    Chuck    Bennett    747-0268    We will visit the Bald Mt. Preserve near Whitehall NY. It contains an easy ridge walk and a steep scramble to a cliff-top overlooking South Bay and the lower Champlain Valley.    Elevation gain is about 700 ft, total distance about 5 miles.    WCMC

After lunch we will drive to the south side of the river where there are another 2 miles of walkways along the Hudson. Meet at McDonald's on west side of Northway exit 18 at 9:15 am.

The reward is nice views of both the Lake George narrows and Northwest bay.Those who prefer a less strenuous hike could walk the trail south along east side of Northwest Bay. This is a pretty spot for lunch.    The trail is typically well used so that trail breaking is not required. WCMC

The total distance is 20 miles over level terrain. As of the 13th of April the Oak St. entrance to the trail is closed due to construction. If the work is finished by our scheduled date there will be an option for a longer ride starting at the Warming Hut at 9:00 AM. Email will be sent on April 30 for latest news. From Prospect Rock is a fine view of Manchester, Mount Equinox (tallest of the Taconics),  Little Equinox, Beartown Notch and Mother Myrick Mountain. June    13    #1459    GULL BAY/LAST GREAT SHORELINE HIKE    Lenore and Jack    587-6161    These Preserves are owned by the Lake George Land Conservancy and are located on the eastern shore of Lake George in the Town of Putnam.    We will first visit the Gull Bay Preserve and explore up to 2 miles of trails including a view of the Great Blue Heron Rookery from the orange trail.    We then drive to the Last Great Shoreline Preserve where we will explore its two hiking trails, including two overlooks of Lake George, for a total of ~ 2.5 miles.    This is the first time that this outing has been offered so please join us and don’t forget to bring your camera and binoculars.    Depending on the time and the group’s interest we may offer an additional hike to either Mt Defiance or explore part of the LaChute River Walk Trail both in Ticonderoga.    This will add some additional driving time and hiking for the day.    WCMC* MORE

June    20    #1460    CEDAR RIVER FLOW PADDLE    Ray Bouchard    893-7314    From Wakely Dam we will paddle the length of the Flow, continuing upstream on the Cedar River for an additional mile to a lean-to where we will have lunch and then return for a total distance of 9-10 miles.  The pace will be leisurely, so we’ll have plenty of time to explore the shoreline and look for wildlife.    The flow is home to waterfowl and other birds so bring your binoculars and camera – who knows, we may even see a moose.    The drive is a little longer than we are used to so we will depart from the WCMC at 8:30, with a brief stop at the Town of Johnsburg Court House in Wevertown at 9:00 and a pit stop at Stewart’s in Indian Lake at 10:00.    The last 10 miles is on an unimproved dirt road. The trailhead is near the north end of Pilot Knob Road immediately before Pilot Knob Marina. Be prepared for a strenuous 5 mile hike with a 1520’ elevation change. A portion of the ascent is not clearly defined, not really a bushwhack but subject to “interpretation.” The views of Lake George along the ridge are frequent, changing and are as or more spectacular than any along the lake. November    14    #1480    SHELVING ROCK RIDGE TRAIL    Don McMahon    832-1801    From the Shelving Rock Mtn TH, on the road of the same name, we climb ~2/3 of the way to the summit before bearing ENE along the ridge with some ups and downs.    After ~2 miles we turn S and head for Shelving Rock Brook which we will follow back to our starting point.    This is mostly a woods walk with some scenic views along the ridge and cascading waterfalls along the brook.    The approximate gain over this nearly 5 mile RT is 1,200’.    Depending on weather conditions and the desire of participants, we have the option to include a hike to the summit of Shelving Rock Mtn.    This would add ~3/4 mile and 250’ gain. December    26    #1485    SHIPPEE'S LEDGE    Peter Fedorick    893-2629    Shippee’s Ledge is located ~7 miles west of the Village of Corinth.    An old logging road and short trail gradually rises ~250’ over the mile long wood’s walk to an open area where there are expansive views of the east end of the Great Sacandaga Lake and the surrounding mountains.    Meet at the Village of Corinth’s public parking lot across from the beach just north of the Village on Rt 9N at 10.    The trail and overlook are on private property so please respect the property owner’s land.  The hike is scheduled for the day after Christmas and was intentionally selected because it is a short drive for most and short in length.    If you would like to do an additional hike that day please feel free to contact either Kurt or myself.    In order to encourage carpooling an additional meeting location could be the Amtrak Station in Saratoga Springs – again, please contact either Kurt or myself to make arrangements

OK Slip Falls, located near North River in NYS's recent "OK Slip Falls tract," purchased from Finch Pruyn, it is the tallest falls in the Adirondacks and one of the tallest in the state, falling approximately 250'. For nearly 100 years prior to the state's purchase it has been off limits to the public. The winter view of it has been reported as "spectacular" and the way in as "a very good ski." I'll let you know the night before whether skis, snowshoes, spikes or either/or will be best.  6 miles RT, about 800 ft. total vertical.  WCMC at 9:00 or Wevertown at approximately 9.45 or Ross Pond Trailhead (Rt. 28, 15.2 miles north of the light in Wevertown on the left) at approximately 10.05. The falls should have a pretty good stream and with any luck it will be sunny and we will see rainbows dancing in the mist. We put in at the State Line on Rt 313 and paddle for 12 miles to the Rt 22 bridge with a stop for lunch at the Giorgi Museum in Shushan. The first 7 1/2 miles has many fast sections, sharp turns and possible obstructions. The 4 1/2 mile after-lunch portion is easier. With proper water levels it is a fun trip. Meet at McDonald's in Greenwich at 9:15.

Access is via a 2 mile dirt road off Split Rock Road from Route 9N (Lakeshore Drive). The dirt road can be rough but is generally passable with an AWD and there is a parking lot at the beginning of the dirt road so a shuttle can be arranged in to the pond.  WCMC*

Beginning at the large hikers parking lot across from the Roaring Brook Trail to Giant on Rt 73, we will hike 6-7 miles roundtrip and a 700’ elevation gain to beautiful Beaver Meadow Falls.  After a ½ mile walk along the gravel road that takes you past the Ausable Club’s golf course we reach the club’s gatehouse where the actual trail begins.  At this point we will decide if some will walk the Lake Road towards Lower Ausable Lake to access the falls or join me using the West River Trail to the falls, returning on the East River Trail. Despite a mid-June hike there should be lots of water from snowmelt to satisfy everyone.  Meet at the WCMC at 8:45 for a timely departure at 9:00 or meet at Northway Exit 24 at 9:20.  As always, alternate meeting places along the Northway can be arranged.

To get to Shenantaha Park, go west on Rt 67 from Northway exit 12 for 1.5 miles, turn left onto Eastline Rd, then go 1/4 mile to turn left into the Park. Meet at Shenantaha Creek Park at 9:45 am.

From Wakely Dam we paddle to the end of the lake, upstream on the Cedar River for a mile to a lean-to for lunch and then return to the dam.  9-10 miles in all.  A beautiful remote and scenic location.  The pace will be leisurely, so we’ll have plenty of time to explore the shoreline and look for wildlife.    Waterfowl, raptors and other birds are plentiful so bring your binoculars and camera. Ray Bouchard says we may even see a moose. Departing WCMC at 8:30 or Wevertown at 9:00. There will be a pit stop at Stewart’s in Indian Lake at 10:00.    The last 10 miles is  dirt road but well travelled and should be in fine shape.

NEW OUTING – we have paddled and hiked some from this location but this may be the first official “paddle only” outing of Thirteenth Lake for the CC’s. Thirteenth lake is only two miles long but its shoreline is mostly state owned and gives you a sense of remoteness, surrounded with heavily wooded mountains. From our starting point at the boat launch located on the northern end of the lake, ~150 yards down a wide smooth trail to the water,  we will explore the lake at a leisurely pace, stopping for lunch and a swim at a picturesque picnic spot known as Elizabeth Point before returning to paddle and explore more of the lake. Canoe/Kayak wheels may be helpful. WCMC or Wevertown at 10:00.

Starting at Edgecomb Pond we hike ~ 2 mi and ~ 900’ gain to the summit of Cat Mt.  The panoramic views of Lake George from the summit make this an ideal lunch spot.  After a leisurely lunch we would return to Edgecomb Pond.   For those that would like to add some adventure to the hike we would delay lunch, selecting a spot on the way, and hike over the ridge to the cabin on Thomas Mt. and continue to the Thomas Mt. parking lot where we spotted cars earlier.  This option would add ~ 2.5 mi and ~ 800’ more of gain for a total of ~6.5 mi.    WCMC* or meet at Northway Exit 24 at 9:50.    MORE

Haystack is one of a whole lot of small peaks in the northern Taconics between Wells and Pawlet, Vermont. Along with its closest neighbors, Middle and Bald, the trio are known as the Three Sisters. Haystack has been called the "Gibralter of Vermont" because of its distinctive cliffs and dramatic outcrops of slate and quartzite. From the 1900 ft summit you can see west to Glens Falls, south to Equinox and just to the north is Lake St. Catherine.    This really nice hike is 4 miles RT with ~ 500’ elevation change on a nice trail.  WCMC*    MORE

A very pretty 2.8 mile (round trip) hike on very nice trail to the 1,215 foot summit of Cook Mountain in Ticonderoga on the west shore of Lake George.  Cook Mountain is located on a 172 acre parcel owned by the Lake George Land Conservancy. From the grass and oak covered summit are views of northern Lake George includiong Anthony's Nose, Rogers Rock. We'll continue left, cross a brook and begin a steady, mostly gradual climb to Moose Mountain Pond at 3.2 miles. The trail continues along the shore to a lean-to at 3.5 miles where we'll have lunch and a view of Moose Mountain!
